Not My Favorite Way to Spend the Day

I woke up today knowing I had a 2 hour and 40 minute dentist appointment ahead. Two old crowns had developed some decay underneath and needed replacing. Well, when my dentist popped the old gold crown off, the back of my tooth crumbled and root was exposed. The decay was more extensive than suspected. After the appointment, I came home for a little while to get some lunch before I head off to my emergency root canal appointment with the endodontist. Not my favorite way to spend the day... Then, because my dental benefits for the year will be used up this afternoon, I've got two temporary crowns till January - when the new year begins, so do new benefits.

On a brighter note, I've felt great this week. A little tired by the end of the day, but no stiffness or soreness to be found. I've followed an almost normal schedule - Pilates on Monday, 4.8 miles Tuesday, 5.3 miles Wednesday and 3.7 miles this morning. I'll stick to 5 milers on Saturday and Sunday, then maybe get in a few longer runs before the next marathon. By longer I mean in the 6-12 mile range. I've been very pleased with the easy recovery this week.

I got an email asking me to test a new product - Airdrives. Since I don't listen to music while I run, I offered to pass them around the running group and write a summary review. They are on their way, I'll get something up about them in a few weeks. I was also asked if I could cut my last post down to the 550-750 word range for possible publication in Oregon Distance Runner and on the ORRC website. I'm trying, but finding it difficult - it's 2412 words! I've got it down to 800, but don't know if I can find 50 more words to cut. I guess I need to apologize to all of you for having so much to say!

Well, time to go get my root rotor-rootered. Yikes!

Oh my!! A root canal, unexpected!!!! Well, many people would say they'd rather do a root canal than run anything over a mile...so at least you have them beat!

Edit tip...slash agressively, cut the adjectives, keep active voice...you'll get 'er done...your writing will encourage many!

So would you rather run a marathon on a hot day or have a root canal?

Way to be a trooper! Hang in there!

I used to HATE the word count limits from editors, but after a while it helps you become more streamlined with your general writing style. Of course, it helps to have a side blog where I can ramble as much as I'd like to.

Good luck with the root canal.

Ack!!! Good luck with your teeth! Somehow when I first read the title I skipped the 'not' maybe my mind was just trying to be optimistic. I've been luckily blessed with good teeth genes so I really feel for anyone that has to go through these kinds of things.

I'm curious to hear about how those airbud things work. I like music some times and am currently not at all happy with my headphones.

Exciting about the writing publication as well! I'd have a nightmare trying to cut any of my reports to that size :)

I hate crowns. My dentist seems to love them. You can run 50k's and endure marathon dental appointments that include root canals. You are one tough lady. Congratulations on the invitation to have the report published. That's great.

Look at you, all important in the running world. :) hehe.

Good luck with the dentist stuff, there is nothing fun about all that.

I feel your pain! I felt great this week, too until thursday night. We had our 2nd annual staff flag football game against sumner. Reminder for next year: No sprinting or speedwork after running a 50k.

Bummer to hear about the emergency root canal. I had a cap that didn't last 6 months before I had to have a root canal :( The dentist, even though a very nice man, is one my least favorite places to go.

Thanks for the comments :)

I hope the recovery from your root canal goes as well as your 50k recovery! : )

I'm trying the headphones too. I've got some coming so we can compare notes.

Was your jaw sore after being open that long for the dentist? The pain...ug.

Take care. Keep smiling!!

Blah, almost anything emergency with the teeth is never pleasant. Hopefully it take long for you to return to normal running routine.

I'm with Eric...way to be a trooper...I'm thinking a 50 mile run would have been a better way to spend the day....

Need a proof-reader...send it my way to help find those words to cut....I think it is great that your "notes" are being published...you are awesome...

Just a week away from the start of my Maniac journey...3 marathons in 90 days...I'm nervous but ready...

Oh goodness, your dental procedure descriptions sent multiple waves of chills down my spine. Good grief! I hope by now you are on the road to recovery in that respect. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that!

Don't apologize for writing too much. We would never get to hear all the details if we edited our writing all the time. Your blog is your blog is your blog and you can do whateva' you want with it.

Take care of the teeth,
Meghan

Hey, I thought I already left a comment to this? Maybe I didn't have anything clever to say.

Dental appointments are good mental training for ultras :)
