Distractions

The outpouring of concern and love for the families in my previous post is amazing - both in our community and in the blogging world. I appreciate all your kind words and prayers, and your support. We are pulling together in our co-op community and at our Y to do what we can for the families. Thank-you. Though both women are still in serious condition, they both will make it. I am sure the grief will long outlast the physical recovery.

I ran a little over five miles with Rick yesterday - a hilly course and a fast pace. Today we ran a about five miles again - a little easier course and pace. My leg is feeling much better - not a 100%, but about 90%. I'm very pleased about that. I got some new shoes last weekend - I went back to the Asics 2120s rather than the Nimbus. I guess the 2120's have more support and control than the others, and though I know that overuse caused the injury, I think the shoes contributed. So I'm back to the ones I ran happily in for a couple years - the only difference is I went to a women's shoe rather than back to a man's.

I'm taking a rest day tomorrow - I'm going to sleep in. I haven't been able to sleep too well the last couple of nights - the heat, the thoughts in my head, endless worrying over my friends have left me with about nine hours in two nights. I can't sleep in Friday morning because I've got to teach Pilates, and I need to try to get one good night. I'm thinking I might just be tired enough today to fall asleep and stay asleep.

The relay is this weekend and at this point I am very much looking forward to the effort of running and the light-hearted play of the big adventure. I am ready for a distraction and I'm pretty sure I will find it in sharing a van with Eric, Rob, Steve, Jenny and Rick for over 24 hours!

I will tell Steve to be nice, but I have no control over him. I will also encourage him to get Eric to join him so they can "do a little dance" for you. I know it would make your day, but maybe not Rob's.

I can't imagine what those families have gone through and will go through for the rest of their lives. It is unimaginable to me.

Rest up, you will need it.

Dee Dee was just telling me that some friends of ours ran the Freedom 5K over the 4th in sub 17. One is 15, the other is my age. Some people have some nerve! :-)

Hmmm, 24hr van duty... sounds like a super fun filled weekend!! I agree that the run will be a healthy channeling of emotion and energy.

Your community is lucky to have a family like yours in it.

It will be a nice distraction to be out on the roads and in the van. Remind me to be nowhere near you if Eric and Steve are together.

Thinking of you Michelle. What a terrible tragedy.

I'm glad you're able to embrace your home and family and friends right now. Rest up and take care of yourself, too. The relay, I'm sure, will be a good thing.

It is silly to wish you to have fun, because you guys always do. I do hope it'll help to live through the times of difficulties.

I can't wait! I ran 4.65 miles this moring, with walking too. I'm not 100% either. I felt no pain, but I could tell I wasn't 100% better. So, I think I'll make it. I too, am so sorry to hear of this tragedy. It always makes me hug and kiss my own children 10X more and to tell them a million times how much I love them. I hope you slept well last night. Go to bed early tonight ya hear!

This type of healing takes a long time for many people, just as those poor mothers will never fully heal. These tragedies do bring a community together, as you've demonstrated. I hope you're able to calm your mind soon.

Looking forward to tomorrow! Bring it on, Maniacs! :) (What am I saying? I should be shaking in fear!)

I'm sure the race will be a good distraction for you. The accident is so tragic. There have been a number of traffic accidents lately in Portland involving children. My heart breaks every time I hear about them. I can only imagine how much more difficult it is when you know the families. My heart goes out to you and everyone involved.

So sorry to hear about the tragic accident. Hopefully this weekend of running and comraderie will offer you a chance to work through some of the emotions.
