A Few More Details

A couple of things I forgot to mention in my last post:

1) I finished D*L. That's right, dead last. Melissa was about six steps ahead of me at the finish. We both got a prize - I got a dozen farm-fresh eggs straight from the RD's farm. Melissa got a running beanie. You know what? Finishing DL is fine with me - I am thrilled that I did it!

2) Last week was my highest mileage week ever: 54.4 miles.

3) I may have mentioned this, but it's worth mentioning again. I had fun! Somewhere on that last loop, or maybe on the out and back, I told myself this would be my one and only 50K. I was wrong - I've already started trying to figure out when the next one will be. I'm guessing that most of you knew that before I did.

4) I drank about 36 ounces of water on this run. Rob tells me that's still not enough, and that I can get away with that while it's cold out, but will have to do better as it warms up. I'm sure he is right, but hey! That's better than I've ever done before. Baby steps, right?

I have barely been sore this time around. Just a little bit in the hips and that is it. I was, however, very tired. I walked on Sunday - probably 1.5 miles, did Pilates Monday and had plans to run this morning. When the alarm went off, I did something I have never, ever done before. I turned it off and fell right back asleep. I did wake up a little later when Eric's alarm went off - just long enough to tell him I was sleeping in. I got a grand total of nine hours of sleep last night and finally, today feel my normal energy returning. I'm going to go really easy this week - I'm thinking 15-20 miles total for the week. I haven't had a break like that since the Seattle Marathon. Next week I'll pick it back up.

The next event on the agenda is the Orcas Fat Ass. After looking over the elevation maps, I am sticking to one loop. It has 4000 foot elevation gain in 15 miles - compared to Capital Peak, which had 2500 in 17 miles. Capital Peak was exhausting, so I think I'll stay with my original plan for Orcas. I'd like to do the Mt. Si 50K, but it is the week before Eugene and I don't think I'm ready for back to back races. I'll keep looking though...

On another note, our running club is starting up it's beginner training program next week. A bunch of us are going to meet the new runners right after the regular Saturday morning run (delaying Starbucks) and work with the newbies. Our hope is to get them running 5K in time for one of our local Y races (the race benefits the Partners for Youth program). We are planning to use Cool Running's Couch to 5K program. We are going to assign mentors to small groups and get this thing going. And of course, we'll indoctrinate them into the Y Run Club culture by inviting them all to Starbucks after.

I'll take all the women ages 18-25:)You know, to help them out and all.

Don't thank me. I'm all about the giving.

Woo hoo! If I had known they were givin away eggs, I might of come out. I would of gauranteed I'd a been last. Heck, they would probably have showered me with prize money so they could all go home :-) Is there a maniac category for Ultras? OMG!! LOL. Make sure you protect the women from Rob.

After reading #3, I more convinced than ever that we must have a disease or a genetic defect. ;-) It's kind of like that Lays Potato Chip tag-line "No One Can Eat Just One!"

I'm glad you are taking a slight break. I've been worried about you! Just kidding...but good for you, listening to your body. Have fun with the new runners!

I am so glad you're giving yourself more rest! (Sometimes even moms need that). :)

Have fun with the newbies- don't you just love "recruiting" new people and watching them grow? It's the best!

Nothing wrong with DL, been there many times, the main point is you never give up and so you're a super human.

I'm interested to learn when your next one(50K) is going to be and if I'm ready by then, I would luv to tag along(I'm very good at just inviting myself). :

No surprise, and I think ultras have it in it - you get sucked in before you even realize it. Orcas 1 loop sounds like a good plan, but I would keep thinking on Mt. Si and Eugene. And drinking definitely needs to be bumped up!! Are you crazy, 36oz in 7 hrs? A bottle an hour first 4 hrs, then 1/2 bottle later - minimum. Work on it:)

Doesn't DFL mean "Donuts for Later"?

Congrats on your pigtail 50k!!!!

Mt. Si? Maybe I could barely get myself in shape enough to run that with you. I know we talked about that last year :)

Hope to see you this weekend as I am thinking of running with you on Saturday

I know what you mean by tired, although I managed to go to an hour spin class on Monday, and a run today(wed), but I am tired! No soreness either! What is happening to us?

Having fun is the key and farm fresh eggs sounds like a great prize!!!

I'm still jealous you get to run on Orca's island, I've got to get that one on my calendar for next year.

In my track club, we always cheer loudest for the person who finishes last. It's sometimes harder to do than to finish ahead. I hope those newbies know what a treasure you are.

What a great attitude! In my book, finishing with a smile is what it is all about.

It's great you are working wtih new runners too. :)

I envy you. Not finishing, not the mileage, not the long rest. But the fun - even if I can achieve all other things on my own, having fun while running doesn't seem to depend on me alone.
