Busy Day

You know how it is. I can't skip a run. I know I should have taken an extra rest day yesterday, but I forgot about my standing run date with Barb. She called me Wednesday night to see what I thought about the roads, and we decided we'd give it a shot - if they were too icy we'd head home. I woke up during the night and heard rain - that's good, it means it's not freezing. When I got up at 4:30 am it was 36 degrees. I met Barb at her front door and we headed off. The roads and sidewalks were mostly wet, with shady areas still covered with snow and ice. I think we had to walk two or three times to get past particularly slick spots, and we ran for about a half mile on chunky, melting ice but generally it was a good run. We totaled five miles at a very easy pace.

Yesterday was one of those days that hits the calendar every so often - where it is non-stop morning to night. I went for that early run with Barb, had time for a quick shower and a three minute breakfast, straight to the Y for a board meeting, from there directly to preschool to teach a parenting class. I got out of there about 12:15 and decided to give myself a break, so I came home, had lunch and took a 20 minute nap. Then I went to the office, worked till four, loaded up the car, ran to the store for a forgotten tablecloth, then on to the evening event. A local parenting magazine was hosting a preschool information night for parents. We set up a display, including a sensory table filled with water and toys for kids, and worked there all night. Eric stopped by on his way home from the airport to say hello, and I was so busy I barely got to talk to him. We finished up there, packed up and headed for home about 9:00. I'm glad days like that don't come around too often!

Here's a picture from last night - you can see me in the background sharing info about our schools.

I managed to drag myself out of bed at 4:30 again so I could get to the Y and teach Pilates. It's funny - I always feel so tired and kind of unenthusiastic about getting up to teach the class, but once I'm there I love it. I come home feeling energized and looking forward to the next one. I probably just need to get to bed earlier so I'm not so tired in the morning. This week, with Eric gone, I was up way too late every night - I think I managed 5 to 6 hours each night. Not necessarily a good way to go into my first trail run. I am off this afternoon though and I see a nap in my future.

Today, I get to say this: Happy Trails!

Michelle, if anyone ever questions the compatibility of a vegetarian diet and long distance running, you can tell them about me. I've experienced vegetarian and meat diet, and the vegetarian one wins hands down. My body doesn't lie.

How DO you do it? I am really struggling with balancing work, school, and working out! Is there a trick? A certain kind of food you eat? Am I not getting enough sleep?
